The next head of the Democratic National Committee could be right here in our backyard.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is reportedly considering a run for the DNC chairman seat, according to Politico.

One top Indiana Democrat told Politico that he’s been listening to top DNC members who want him to run for the seat, and that he’s considering it.

Buttigieg himself acknowledged that he’s been talking with “local and state leaders from around the country about the future direction of the Democratic Party.” He feels the party needs to connect better with communities like South Bend. However, he also says he’s “staying focused on South Bend,” according to an email he sent to Politico.

He had no further response to follow-up questions from Politico.

Buttigieg gained national notoriety for a New York Times op-ed piece that touted him as the possible “first openly-gay President.” He’s a Harvard graduate, Rhodes Scholar, and served as a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve. He’s also considered a rising star in the party.
