DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Air Force is planning mission changes at two Michigan bases as part of a nationwide restructuring as the Pentagon works to slow the growth of military spending.

Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan is chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said Friday a C-27J cargo aircraft mission planned for the Air National Guard base at Battle Creek will be replaced with a unit flying two types of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Pilots on the ground will operate the aircraft for combat reconnaissance and strike missions.

Also, A-10 fighters will be removed from Selfridge Air National Guard base in Macomb County. The base will gain four additional KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft.

The Air Force says any personnel changes resulting from the moves will be decided this spring.
