Porter County leaders say they are in desperate need of money to keep their veteran's treatment court in operation.

Officials say the number of participants is growing more quickly than expected so they plan to ask the Porter County Council to increase funding from $55,000 to $85,000 for the year.

Participants have the opportunity to clear themselves of criminal charges and avoid jail time if they comply with a highly structured program.

The program is used for domestic violence, criminal mischief, drug possession and drunk driving offenses.

Porter County's Deputy Prosecutor says more than half of veterans court participants have suffered a traumatic brain injury, along with other problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Lake County is looking into starting a similar program, and more than 80 veterans treatment courts have popped up nationwide.
