Designate a driver because police are conducting a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night

Another sobriety checkpoint is set to take place on Saturday night, May 2.

The St. Joseph County Traffic Safety Partnership has announced one checkpoint for the north side of South Bend and, possibly, one in Mishawaka, as well.

Officers will be in position between 10:00 pm on Saturday through 2:00 am on Sunday.

Impaired driving is one of our nation’s most frequently committed violent crimes. Just in Indiana in 2012 there were 6,264 alcohol-related crashes resulting in 158 fatal crashes, according to statistics presented by the St. Joseph County Traffic Safety Partnership.

The partnership recommends the following easy steps to have a safe and enjoyable weekend:

Plan a safe way home before going out to drink.

Before drinking, designate a designated sober driver and leave your keys at home.

If you decide to drink use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member to get home safely

and remember , if you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take the keys and help that person make it home safely.
