South Bend school officials to consider later start time

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — School officials in South Bend are considering a proposal to make school start at the later time of 9 a.m. for intermediate center and high school students.

Officials with the South Bend Community School Corp. say the goal is to lessen tardiness by giving students an extra hour of sleep. But some parents are worried that a later start time only will encourage students to stay up later at night.

Superintendent Carole Schmidt has said she plans to ask the school board to approve the proposal during a meeting next week. She said the board likely will vote on the proposal next month.

Despite some concerns from parents, Schmidt tells the South Bend Tribune that most feedback has been positive.

Under the proposal, school days would end at 4 p.m.
