The death of a 21-year-old Notre Dame student who fell from the roof of the Joyce Center over the weekend was ruled accidental.
William Meckling’s cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma injuries consistent with falling from an area about 35 feet off the ground, according to the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office. A toxicology report will be complete sometime in the next six weeks.

Meckling, who was commonly known as Billy, had climbed to an area of the roof early Saturday morning with a small group of other students for an unknown reason. The area where Meckling fell from was wet from rain.
Students approached a campus security guard for help at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Meckling was found laying unresponsive near Gate 7 on the east side of the Joyce Center. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Meckling was set to graduate Sunday, May 17, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was also a member of the fencing team.
A memorial Mass for Meckling took place Monday morning, May 18, at the Basilica of Sacred Heart.
