Woman in serious condition after being hit by broken bat at Red Sox game

BOSTON (AP) — The woman who was struck in the head by a broken bat at Fenway Park is in serious condition.

The statement released Saturday by a Boston hospital on behalf of Tonya Carpenter’s family thanks well-wishers for their thoughts and prayers. The family asked for privacy as she recovers.

Carpenter had been taken to the hospital Friday night with what police called life-threatening injuries suffered during the game between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox.

She was seated a few rows up between home plate and third base when Oakland’s Brett Lawrie broke his bat on a groundout in the second inning.

Carpenter was bleeding from the head as she was wheeled from the field on a stretcher.
