Man dies after van crashes into home on northwest side of South Bend

A 59-year-old South Bend man died early Wednesday morning after his van crashed into a home on the northwest side of South Bend.

Police were called to the intersection of Darden and Lilac roads for the crash at 6:34 a.m., Asst. Chief Bill Thompson with the St. Joseph County Police Department.

Gary Schroeder was driving a van west on Darden Road when the van went through the intersection and crashed into the foundation of the home at 52509 Lilac Road, Thompson said. Schroeder was taken to a local hospital, where he died. Nobody else was in the van.

Police believe Schroeder may have suffered a medical issue that caused him to crash the vehicle, Thompson said. The crash is still under investigation.
