Gas prices nearing $3 per gallon throughout Michiana

Gas prices have jumped to nearly $3 per gallon at many pumps throughout Michiana.

Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy, says the late week 25-cent spike is due to a low report of oil inventory.

The low inventory is the result of maintenance being performed at at least five refineries in the Great Lakes region, DeHaan said. The refineries are down because of the maintenance.

That same report has sent prices on Wall Street upwards of $4 per gallon this week alone, DeHaan said.

Just before noon, the cheapest gas in St. Joseph County was $2.64 per gallon at Costco on University Park Drive in Granger. Gas prices ranged from $2.74 to $2.99 per gallon throughout South Bend and $2.75 to $2.99 in Elkhart and Niles, Mich.
