OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Warriors’ fans were honking their horns and dancing in streets throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to celebrate their team’s first NBA title in 40 years.

The party began as soon as the Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to claim the title in six games Wednesday night.

A rowdy crowd had gathered in an Oakland intersection and some were running through the streets of San Francisco’s Mission District, but there were no immediate reports of any violence, vandalism or arrests.

The game was more than 2,000 miles away in Cleveland, but it made little difference to local fans, thousands of whom had gathered at Oracle Arena in Oakland to watch the win on a big screen.

Meantime, Cleveland Cavaliers fans already are looking to next year. That’s when LeBron James and the Cavs may finally provide the championship title that has eluded the city for more than five decades.

Fans weren’t blaming James, the Akron kid who came back to Cleveland last summer and carried the team on his back during the playoffs because of key injuries to teammates.

Forty-six-year-old Jeff Bentley, who watched the game on big-screen televisions with several thousand other fans in a plaza next to Quicken Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, says “next year they’ll have a better chance.”

He says Cleveland fans are accustomed to having to wait until next year.
