The following is a schedule of events taking place at the Elkhart Jazz Festival provided by Trevor Wendzonka, Lerner Theatre Marketing Manager:

Start your day off right: Three special 9:30 a.m. events kick off the festival’s second day:

• Generations Trio will perform during the free “Coffee on the Piazza,” which goes until noon at Ruthmere, 302 E. Beardsley Ave.
• JAZZORAMA! (pass required) at the Knights of Columbus, 112 E. Lexington Ave., is the newest festival tradition. Featuring short solo sets by favorite musicians, the event will run until about noon, when father and son Tom and Gene Knific take the stage.
• Several local high schools will be featured at various venues, which are free to the public. The bands are: Goshen (9:30 to 10 a.m. at Civic Plaza); Elkhart Central (9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Crystal Ballroom, 410 S. Main St.); Penn (10 to 11 a.m. in the Lerner Theatre); Elkhart Memorial (10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Civic Plaza); Jimtown (11 a.m. to noon at the Crystal Ballroom); Concord (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lerner); and Warsaw (noon to 1 p.m. at Civic Plaza).
• Straight from the Smithsonian: Dr. John Edward Hasse, one of country’s foremost music educators, will give a presentation on the life of Billie Holiday in two sessions at the Midwest Museum of American Art, 429 S. Main St. (2 to 4:30 p.m., pass required for entry). Hasse is curator of America music the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and was founding executive director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.
• Late-night legend in prime time: David Sanborn brings his smooth sax to the Lerner Theatre stage to punctuate the Saturday schedule. With six Grammy awards and eight gold albums, Sanborn has spent the past four decades recording with music’s biggest names, making guest appearances on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” and hosting his own shows. He’ll perform at 8 p.m.

• Lifetime Achievement Awards: Five people having long associations with the festival will be recognized during the annual awards presentation, a free event at 3:30 pm. in the Lerner. Volunteers Tom and Fawne Atkinson, supporters Jane Burns and Brian Byrn, and singer Joan Collaso will be added to the 28-year honor roll of achievement.
• Catch them for free: In addition to the high school bands, Saturday’s free Civic Plaza sets: Bad Entertainment Dancers (10 a.m.); Jazz Assemblage (1:30 p.m.); Truth in Jazz (3 p.m.); Whistle Pigs (5 p.m.); Gull Lake Jazz Orchestra (6:30 p.m.); Tim Cunningham (8 p.m.); Fred Powell Sextet (9:30 p.m.); Tony Monaco/Fareed Haque Trio (11 p.m.).
