South Bend abortion clinic could close following Indiana State Department of Health complaint

The abortion clinic in South Bend could close after a complaint was filed by the Indiana State Department of Health on June 26, the second complaint the agency has filed against the clinic in 2015.

The Women’s Pavilion at 2010 Ironwood Circle is St. Joseph County’s only standalone abortion clinic. It’s run by Dr. Ulrich Klopfer.

The Department of Health inspected the clinic in June and found that some patients seeking medical abortion, which involves taking medicine rather than by undergoing a surgical procedure, were given the medication at the first consultation and not after the state’s mandatory 18-hour waiting period, South Bend Tribune reported.

The ISDH complaint also stated that there is no registry of all patients that clinic has seen or a governing body that determines clinic policies.

The ISDH previously filed a complaint against the clinic in February.

Depending on the outcome of the complaint, The Women’s Pavilion could lose its operating license, 95.3 MNC’s news partners ABC 57 reported.

Klopfer’s medical license is also under review by the Indiana Medical Licensing Board. A hearing is planned for later this year.
