Suspect in South Bend toddler's death pleads guilty

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Another local teenager implicated in the 2014 shooting death of a South Bend toddler has pleaded guilty to charges filed against him.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Williams, who was charged with counts of assisting a criminal and carrying a handgun without a license, with a gang enhancement, pleaded guilty Tuesday in the death of John Swoveland Jr.

Authorities say the 2-year-old died when he was struck by a stray bullet from a gunfight between two rival gangs several blocks away.

The South Bend Tribune reports in all, eight men and teenage boys were charged in the toddler’s death. Three of the defendants, including convicted gunman Robert Griffin, have been sentenced to prison, and two others have pleaded guilty. Others are awaiting trial.

Williams is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.
