EAU CLAIRE, Mich. (AP) — A new champion of cherry pit spitting has been crowned in southwestern Michigan, but the real glory is going to a 15-year-old girl.
Megan Ankrapp of Buchanan had a pit spit of 49 feet, ¼ inch — the best performance at the 42nd annual contest Saturday.
But Megan didn’t qualify for the championship round because her earlier spits were too short. Instead, she won the women’s category.
The championship spit-off was claimed by Kevin Bartz of Niles with a winning distance of 48 feet, 8 inches. He was followed by Brian Krause at 48 feet.
A member of the Krause family has won 26 contests since the event began in 1974 to celebrate tart cherries. It’s held at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm in Eau Claire.
