Power outages reported in northern Indiana, southwestern Michigan following storms

More than 8,000 people are without power in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan after severe thunderstorms rolled through the area Monday morning, July 13.

Indiana Michigan Power reported the following outages as of 10:02 a.m.:

  • LaPorte County — 2,876
  • St. Joseph County — 404
  • Elkhart County — 445
  • Berrien County, Mich. — 3,906
  • Cass County, Mich. — 469
  • Van Buren County, Mich. — 183

Power should be restored by 11:30 a.m. in Baroda, Mich., LaPorte and the Valley View Drive area of Elkhart, according to I&M spokeswoman Erica Putt. Power in Stevensville, Mich., and Buchanan, Mich., will likely be restored by noon.

Power should be restored by 1 p.m. in the Cassopolis Street area of Elkhart and by 2 p.m. in Bristol and Niles, Mich. 

NIPSCO reported the following outages as of 10 a.m.:

  • Bristol — 44
  • Goshen — 485
  • LaPorte — 2
  • Middlebury — 67
  • Nappanee — 18
  • New Paris — 2
  • Syracuse — 12
  • Wakarusa — 112

Michiana isn’t completely free of the thunderstorm threat for Monday.

A second round of storms is expected to move through the area between 6 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rains, hail, winds up to 60mph and flooding are likely.
