GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) — About two dozen students are going to be picked for the group that will consider suggestions for replacing the Redskins mascot at northern Indiana’s Goshen High School.

Administrators told the district school board Monday night that they plan to have about 20 high school and five middle school students join the committee that will include the high school principal and athletics director.

The Goshen News reports Assistant Superintendent Alan Metcalfe said selection of a new mascot needs to be a student-led process. Officials say the committee will narrow the list of mascots, with plans for the school board to consider a pick in December.

The school board voted 5-2 last month to retire the Redskins mascot effective Jan. 1 after hearing arguments it was offensive to Native Americans.
