A Coloma, Mich., man accused of stabbing his mother to death pleaded guilty to first degree murder on Tuesday.

As part of the plea deal, 47-year-old Monty Menefee will not be charged with any other crimes he committed after the April 24 murder of 79-year-old Lavonne Monta, according to FOX 28. Prosecutors also agreed to drop a charge of habitual traffic offender.

Menefee stabbed Monta several times at a home in Coloma, Mich., and then ran from police for days. He was arrested in Ohio on April 28.

He confessed to the killing in earlier interviews with police. He told police he did it because he was struggling financially and hoped his mother’s life insurance would go to his wife.

Menefee could be sentenced to life without parole. A sentencing hearing is set for Oct. 5.
