ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A distinctive red, barn-like structure in Elkhart County that formerly housed a large farmers market could soon be home to a department store and restaurants.
The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners has approved rezoning the former American Countryside Farmers Market property south of Elkhart for commercial use to allow it to reopen for business.
The plan calls for a department store on the second floor, while the first floor would house six locally run specialty restaurants, an Amish bakery and snack shops as well as a stage. The third floor would be used for storage.
American Countryside Farmers Market LLC President John Levy says the facility could open next month.
The farmers market closed in the wake of the Great Recession.
