After South Bend Community School Corporation had six weather-related make-up days at the end of the school year for two years in a row, school officials have come up with a plan to allow two-hour delays in case of inclement weather.

Indiana public schools are required to be in session for 180 days each year. Days with two hour delays still count toward the 180 days, but schools must make up days that are cancelled.

SBCSC spokeswoman Sue Coney told the South Bend Tribune that school officials have worked out various challenges with transportation and school programs like Head Start and career and technical education to make the delay possible.

The decision on whether or not to delay school for two hours will be made by 5:30 a.m. and then staff, families and news media will be notified shortly thereafter.
