Another hotel is coming to downtown South Bend, this time occupying part of the former Chase Tower at 213 Washington Street.
About $15 million of renovations and redesigning will be completed before the hotel opens in early 2017 as Aloft South Bend, a Starwood Hotels and Resorts property, according to a news release from the company. It’s the first Aloft-style hotel Starwood is opening in Indiana.
When all is said and done, Aloft South Bend will have 183 loft-style rooms on 11 floors, plus a ground floor lobby, a restaurant and bar, space for meetings and live music performances, an indoor Splash pool, a large 24-hour fitness facility and a grab-and-go food and beverage area.
The Chase Tower will also house 83 residential apartments and a parking garage.
With this announcement and other hotels coming to the area, South Bend is ready to add about 500 hotel rooms in the next two years.
“This welcome development will meet an increasing need for more hotel rooms downtown,” Rob DeCleene, executive director of Visit South Bend Mishawaka, said in a statement.
South Bend Common Council President Tim Scott joined DeCleene in applauding the announcement.
“Bringing new life to this major downtown building keeps the city’s economic momentum going,” Scott said in a statement. “This will create jobs and further facilitates a compelling downtown experience.”
The building’s owner, the Tower at Washington Square LLC will seek tax abatements on the building’s new components during the Sept. 28 meeting of the South Bend Common Council.
