A former South Bend Police Department officer is suing the city, alleging that he was improperly fired and asking for his job back.

David Beaty, who was a sergeant when he was fired in August, claims that he was excessively punished by the Board of Public Safety, which didn’t have enough evidence to fire him, WSBT reported.

Beaty also claims that South Bend Police Chief Ron Teachman violated the Open Door Law when the board was deciding how to punish Beaty and that Teachman waited too long to punish him.

Teachman recommended in May that Beaty be fired after several incidents in fall 2014. The Board of Public Safety approved the termination Aug. 19.

Beaty was accused of making lewd comments to a waitress at the P&G Restaurant last fall. He was also accused of leaving his squad car unlocked in November when a laptop was stolen out of it, ignoring orders to respond to more than 120 crashes in November, falsely reporting how his squad car was damaged in December and wasting time during an overtime shift.

Beaty is requesting that he be reinstated to the South Bend Police Department with full back pay.
