The autumn equinox — the moment when the sun appears to cross the celestial equator from north to south — happened precisely at 4:22 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23.
Apple orchards are expanding hours for apple and pumpkin picking, stores are filling up with Halloween costumes and many Michiana residents are looking forward the changing colors of leaves.
Trees began turning from green to deep yellow, bright orange and fire red a few weeks ago, but the peak is still a few weeks off. Fall foliage will peak in southern Michigan and northern Indiana from Oct. 5 to Oct. 21, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.
Get the most out of the autumn beauty by visiting an apple orchard, taking a trip to a Michigan winery or scheduling a fall color tour.
The Elkhart Truth’s 2014 color tour is sure to offer beautiful colors again in 2015. The tour begins in Bristol and winds through Michigan back roads to Three Rivers, Mich., before heading back to Bristol. There are plenty of parks, restaurants and even an apple orchard where you can stretch your legs along the way.
