Mishawaka man who died in collision with train committed suicide, coroner says

A Mishawaka man who died when his vehicle was hit by a train in Mishawaka on Saturday night, Oct. 3, committed suicide, the St. Joseph County coroner said.

The man had driven his vehicle around the railroad crossing arms, which were down, at the railroad tracks on Elder Street at about 6:30 p.m.

He was trapped in the vehicle when the train hit it.

Chief Deputy Coroner Chuck Hurley told WSBT that the man texted his wife before the collision and that he ruled the death as a suicide.
