Two hour delays now an option for South Bend Community School Corporation

South Bend Community School Corporation will have the option to put classes on a two hour delay in the case of bad weather this winter, a move many students, teachers and parents have applauded.

Notices of a two-hour delay will be sent to parents, teachers, students and the media the same way school closings have been announced in the past, WSBT reported. The announcements will also be posted on school websites and Facebook and Twitter pages.

If a two-hour delay is called, students should go to their bus stop two hours later than they normally would and school would begin exactly two hours later than normal. Morning activities, such as athletic practices, would be cancelled, but breakfast would still be served.

Some other programs may be affected by delays, such as Head Start and pre-K classes.

The first two hours of instructional time would be cut from the day, rather than rearranging schedules to fit an entire day of learning into a shorter period of time.

With the delays, school officials hope that the two-hour delay keeps the school from having to extend the school year for weather makeup days, the South Bend Tribune reported.

Indiana law requires schools to be in session for at least 180 days each school year. Delays of up to two hours are allowed to be counted as full days.

If weather conditions don’t improve during the delay period, school administrators will still have the option to cancel school for the day.
