Republican commissioners Andy Kostielney and Deb Fleming voted to veto, agreeing with the Republicans on the county council that the $56.2 million budget is unsustainable in the long term, the South Bend Tribune reported.
Democrat Dave Thomas voted against the veto.
The budget was passed Oct. 13 in a 6-3 vote that was also along party lines.
The proposed 2016 budget is about $4 million more than the 2015 budget, with $2.5 million included to hire 29 new St. Joseph County Jail officers.
The St. Joseph County Council only needs a two-thirds majority — or six votes — to override the veto. If none of the Democrats on the council change their earlier vote, the budget will pass.
