The St. Joseph County Council voted 6-3 to override the county commissioner’s veto of the 2016 budget.

The six Democrats on the council voted in favor of overriding the veto and the three Republicans voted against it, the South Bend Tribune reported.

The 2016 budget is set at $56.2 million, about $4 million more than the 2015 budget. About $2.5 million will go to the St. Joseph County Police Department. Sheriff Mike Grzegorek, a Democrat, requested the budget increase to pay for 29 new officers to work at the St. Joseph County Jail.

The vote followed tense arguments about the budget between the Democrats and Republicans on the council. Read more about the discussion in the full story from the South Bend Tribune.
