Child molesting charges filed against former New Paris Elementary School janitor

Two child molestation charges were filed on Friday, Nov. 13, against a former New Paris Elementary School janitor.

Donald Eugene Powers, 54, of New Paris was charged with one count of child molesting – intercourse or deviate sex with a victim younger than 14, a class A felony, and child molesting, a class C felony, according to online court records.

The crimes are classified with letters, rather than numbers, because the incident or incidents allegedly occurred before Indiana’s sentencing laws changed in July 2014.

He was fired from his janitorial job at New Paris Elementary School when Fairfield Community Schools learned of the accusations, though there is no indication that current New Paris students were involved.

Powers is being held on $250,000 bond at Elkhart County Jail.
