Police called to Dowagiac Union High School after gun comment was overheard by students

A conversation between students alluding to a gun-related threat at Dowagiac Union High School caught the attention of school administrators and police.

Officers were called to the school around 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, after being notified by school administrators about a potential threat, according to a news release from the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers were told that some students heard a conversation between some other students where someone mentioned bringing a gun to school, the news release stated.

Officers interviewed several students who were involved in the conversation and it was determined that there was no specific threat and the student did not have a weapon either at the school or at home, according to the news release.

Officers made contact with the 16-year-old student and his parent at the school. Both the student and his parent were cooperative with police and assisted in the investigation.

The student was released to his parent and police continue to investigate this incident.
