A loose pit bull died Monday, Nov. 16, after it was shot by an Elkhart police officer near McNaughton Park.

The dog was the second pit bull to be shot by an Elkhart police officer in the last three weeks.

Officers were sent to the 1500 block of South 10th Street at about 1:30 p.m. after two pit bulls were reportedly running loose, according to our news partners The Elkhart Truth reported.

The first officer who arrived on scene tried to capture one dog when a second dog charged at him and bit him in the leg, The Elkhart Truth reported. The officer reportedly made sure the surrounding area was safe and then shot at the dog.

The dogs ran toward the Indiana Avenue underpass then back toward McNaughton Park. The dogs’ owner arrived on scene and captured one of the dogs. The other dog — the one that bit the officer — ran through the park, charged at a family and then charged at an officer, who shot the dog, according to The Elkhart Truth.

The pit bull was taken to the Humane Society of Elkhart County, where it died.
