Police in St. Joseph County and around the state of Indiana are increasing patrols during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

Lt. Tim Williams with the Mishawaka Police Department says officers will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers and people who aren’t wearing their seat belts.

“The Thanksgiving holiday period is an extremely busy travel time in Indiana,” Williams said in a statement. “Our focus is on keeping drivers and passengers safe, and increased patrols will allow us to look for those intoxicated drivers, or those unrestrained, and remind them, buckle up and drive sober.”

The period of increased patrols runs through Dec. 6.

There were 520 alcohol-related crashes in Indiana in November 2014. Three people died and 235 people were injured in the crashes. During the same month, 276 crashes involved someone who wasn’t properly restrained, resulting in 15 deaths and 303 injuries.
