Mayors discuss whether Michiana moniker is too confusing

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The mayors of two local cities disagree on whether Michiana is a good way to describe the area around South Bend that includes part of southwest Michigan.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says the term confuses people who live outside the area and believes South Bend Region is a better term. Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood doesn’t see a need to abandon the Michiana name.

Airport officials decided to drop the Michiana name and replace it with South Bend in 1999 because of confusion. The South Bend Tribune reports the local Chamber of Commerce’s new economic development videos advertise the “South Bend Region.”

Both mayors agree the University of Notre Dame helps draw attention and communities in the area need to work together to promote the region.
