After months of construction, work on South Bend’s Western Avenue has been completed.

The $2.8 million neighborhood infrastructure project on South Bend’s west side is a focal point of the West Side Main Streets Revitalization Plan and part of South Bend’s Smart Streets effort to improve access and drive economic development.

“The West Side has needed this investment for a long time,” Mayor Buttigieg says. “Not only is the improved streetscape safer and easier to use, but it also creates a more vibrant and inviting atmosphere for families and businesses.”

The Western Avenue project incorporates new curbs, sidewalks, street lights, and trees. Enhancements also include on-street parking, dedicated bike lanes, and three vehicle lanes—two travel lanes and a center turn lane.

“The streetscape improvements on Western create a sense of place and support the identity of a unique neighborhood center,” says Scott Ford, Executive Director of Community Investment.

Work began in July on the reconstruction of Western between William and Sheridan Streets with a focus on three blocks in the neighborhood business district from Bendix Drive to Dundee Street.

Western Avenue is the fifth completed Smart Streets project.

William Street and Lafayette Boulevard in downtown South Bend converted from one-way to two-way traffic in 2014. The East Jefferson Boulevard streetscape project was also completed in 2014. Lincoln Way West

streetscape improvements were finished in July. Marion and Madison Streets converted from one-way to two-way traffic in August.
