Penn High School senior killed in crash on State Road 23 on Thursday night identified

One person has died in a crash that happened on State Road 23 in Granger.

Emergency crews were called to the 50000 block of SR 23 around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.

The victim, Jack Lane, 17, of Granger, was on his way home from work when his vehicle, a Toyota SUV, left the roadway and struck a tree, according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

Lane was a senior at Penn High School.

The St. Joseph County Police Department issued this release about this crash on Friday:

“The St. Joseph County Police Department is investigating a single vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 17 yr. old young man from Granger. The crash occurred at approx. 10:30 p.m. on Thursday December 3rd, in the 50600 block of S.R. 23 in northeastern St. Joseph County.

Initial indications are that the vehicle left the roadway near the intersection of SR 23 and Adams Rd. The vehicle then re-entered the roadway, turned sideways, left the roadway, and struck a tree on the east side of the road. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this point, however excessive speed has been attributed as a significant contributing cause of the crash. No other vehicles appear to have been involved. St. Joseph County Police Department traffic investigators are continuing to investigate all aspects of this crash.

The victim has been identified as 17 yr. old Jack Lane, Granger, was a senior at Penn High School. School officials at Penn have been notified and are taking appropriate measures to address the situation.”

Callers to 95.3 MNC on Thursday evening described the collision as “very bad” and reported that crews had shut down State Road 23 near Adams Road.
