How to apply for a license to carry a handgun in the state of Indiana

Indiana residents interested in carrying a handgun, either openly or concealed, must apply for a handgun license from the state.

Applying for an Indiana handgun license is a relatively straightforward process. If you plan on applying for a handgun license, here are the steps.

STEP ONE: ONLINE APPLICATION

To begin, applicants must fill out a form online.

The form asks for information about the applicant’s address, employment and criminal history.

The applicant will also be asked to pay a non-refundable fee to the state of Indiana either online or by mail. The cost of the fee depends on the time of license the applicant is seeking.

STEP TWO: FINGERPRINTING

Once the online application is complete and submitted, the applicant should schedule an appointment for electronic fingerprinting. Fingerprinting must be completed during a scheduled appointment at a registered location.

Registration for fingerprinting is available online.

STEP THREE: VISIT THE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT

After an applicant has completed the fingerprinting, the applicant should bring their application number to their local police department for it to be approved and to pay the local fee.

Like the state fee, the cost of the local fee depends on what type of license the applicant is seeking. However, unlike the state fee, a portion of the local fee may be refunded if the application is denied.

STEP FOUR: INDIANA STATE POLICE WILL PROCESS THE LICENSE

Once every step is completed and the fees of the paid, the Indiana State Police will review and either approve or reject the license.

If the application is filled out correctly and there are no other issues, applicants should receive the license in U.S. mail within 60 days.

If the license is not approved, the applicant will be notified via U.S. mail and will be given information about the appeal process.

ABOUT INDIANA HANDGUN LICENSES

A handgun license is not required in Indiana in order to own a handgun, just to carry it — either openly or concealed. If a handgun owner wants to transport a handgun, such as taking it to a shooting range for target practice, a handgun license is not necessary, providing the handgun is unloaded and kept in a locked compartment in the owner’s registered vehicle.

Handgun owners who have a license to carry in Indiana may not be able to carry everywhere. Schools, medical facilities, sports arenas and private businesses may not allow open or concealed carry. Also, only 31 other states accept Indiana’s handgun license as of the publication of this article.
