Judge to rule soon on South Bend mother's killing confession

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A judge is expected to rule next week on if statements a mother accused of killing her 11-month son made to police can be used at trial.

The South Bend Tribune reports Nyesha Crockett and her attorney have asked St. Joseph Superior Court Judge Jane Woodward Miller to bar statements to police from being used as evidence. They claim they were coerced.

However, prosecutors argue Crockett was read her rights and allowed to take breaks during the interrogation.

Crockett is accused in her son’s August 2014 death and an earlier injury to her daughter that left her in a coma. She faces murder, aggravated battery, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and battery.

The judge is expected to rule Dec. 18.

The trial is scheduled for Jan. 4
