Giant queen returned to chess board in downtown South Bend

The missing queen from the chess board in downtown South Bend is back at home, wrapped in a red bow just in time for Christmas.

The queen was stolen in October, according to our news partners ABC 57. But Jamie Higginson, general manager of the DTSB Ambassador Program, said it was back on the board Monday morning, Dec. 14, wrapped up like a Christmas gift.

“It could be brand new, or we could’ve been gifted back our queen,” Higginson told ABC 57.

Higginson isn’t sure if it’s the original queen returned by the person who stole it or if a kind person bought a new one, but he had a message for the secret Santa:

“Thank you, thank you, thank you, and to you merry Christmas.”
