Five people were treated at a hospital for minor injuries they suffered in a crash involving an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputy over the weekend.

Deputy Justin Yoder, 36, was on duty and driving his patrol car on Greene Road when the crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, according to Sgt. Trent Smith with Indiana State Police.

Yoder had looked down briefly and when he looked back up, he saw that traffic had come to a stop at the stoplight at U.S. 33. He swerved to avoid crashing into a stopped SUV, but his vehicle clipped the rear end of the SUV, causing it to roll onto its side.

The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old Elkhart woman, and her four passengers were treated at IU Health Goshen Hospital for minor injuries.

Yoder wasn’t injured.
