A 12-point buck spotted roaming near the busy shopping district along Mishawaka’s Main Street over the years was killed in a crash earlier this month.

The buck stepped into traffic near Dick’s Sporting Goods on Main Street and was hit by a truck and another vehicle Dec. 5, according to the South Bend Tribune

“It was an enormous buck — and a darn old one, record book quality,” Adam Howard, head of sewer repairs for the Mishawaka street department and an avid outdoorsman, told the Tribune.

The buck was seen in the area over the years, which Howard said is proof that wildlife is learning to live in growing urban areas like Mishawaka.

Police awarded the buck to an Ohio man who claimed he hit the animal with his vehicle.

“This buck was a survivor and it’s too bad he had to die like this,” he told the Tribune. “But what bugs me more is that the deer will get mounted, possibly sold, and displayed somewhere other than here in Indiana. I’d love to have seen the DNR take the deer, get it mounted and put it on display for all Hoosiers to see and appreciate.”
