The man suspected in a double homicide in Coloma, Mich., and of the subsequent kidnapping of his two daughters is fighting to stay in Colorado.

Alex Perez appeared in court in Clear Creek County, Colo., on Monday, Jan. 25, and told the judge that he intends to hire a lawyer and will fight extradition to Michigan, our news partners ABC 57 reported.

Perez, 24, is accused of killing 27-year-old Renee Mitchell and 67-year-old John Mitchell on Jan. 13 and then fleeing Michigan with the two young daughters he and Renee Mitchell had together.

A relative found the Mitchells dead in their home on Jan. 14. Perez was arrested when he was found with the girls in Georgetown, Colo., in the early morning hours of Jan. 15.

The girls were placed in the care of Child Protective Services in Colorado.

Perez is expected to appear in court again in February.
