Bikes will be allowed on some weekend South Shore Line trains starting April 2

Bicyclists will be able to travel on the South Shore Line with their bikes starting this April.

The “Bikes on Weekend Trains” pilot program will allow 14 to 40 bikes to be stored on 14 out of the 18 trains that run on the weekends and holidays, according to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. The program begins April 2 and will last through Oct. 30.

Bike service will only be available at South Bend, Dune Park, East Chicago, Hammond, Hegewisch and stations in Chicago because the high-level platforms at those stations allow South Shore riders to walk into the trains with their bike.

Bikes may not be allowed when there are special events on weekends.
