As students returned to the Notre Dame campus this week after spring break, some paused to remember one of their own.

Theresa Sagartz died March 9 from natural causes at her off-campus home, the result of a chronic medical condition.

The Notre Dame-St. Mary’s Observer reported that classmates are remembering her as someone who touched anybody she came into contact with, whether working on schoolwork or just sharing a laugh.

“She was incredibly loyal and caring for her friends, which is definitely one of the things I’ve admired most about her,” Matt Schaefer, Sagartz’s boyfriend, told The Observer. “It was always kind of amazing to me how she was always able to put them first.”

Erica Tabor, Sagartz’s roommate, echoed those sentiments.

“I think that’s the reason why so many people are hurting through this loss,” she said. “She touched anybody that she came in contact with, whether it was sharing with them in laughter or helping them out with schoolwork. She just related to anybody.”

The junior from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was working on a degree in chemistry. Originally planning to attend the Air Force Academy, a rare autoimmune disease diagnosed in her senior year of high school forced her to change her plans and she attended Notre Dame instead.

A candle display in her honor was lit in the Grotto.
