Notre Dame to play Michigan in March Madness round 1 Friday night

A rivalry on the Fighting Irish football field may bleed over onto the basketball court Friday when Notre Dame men’s basketball team takes on Michigan in the March Madness tournament.

And head coach Mike Brey says the team has spent the week preparing.

“I think there’s a little extra energy,” Brey told our news partners ABC 57. “There was a week-long build-up, even though Michigan still had to win, and they did a heck of a job.”

The Notre Dame and Michigan basketball teams haven’t played each other since 2006.

“It’s definitely gonna be a great battle in the paint and it’s gonna be a great battle with the guards as well,” Irish forward Zach Auguste told ABC 57. “So I’m just looking at it from a team aspect.”

The game begins at 9:40 p.m. on CBS.
