Taking the train to Chicago could soon cost South Shore riders a bit more money.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District says it is considering increasing fares 2.5 percent a year over two years rounded to the nearest quarter.

If passed, South Shore train riders who get on at the South Bend International Airport would pay $13.25 for a one-way ticket to the last stops in Chicago beginning June 15, 2016. The rate would go up to $13.50 on June 15, 2017.

The same ride currently costs $13.

The NICTD is inviting the public to comment about the proposed rate hikes at a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the Studebaker Room at the South Bend International Airport.

The public can send in comments online or mail comments to Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, 33 East U.S. Highway 12, Chesterton, Indiana 46304.
