Mishawaka City Council will consider an agreement to share legal costs with the city of South Bend and St. Joseph County if local big box stores seek lower property taxes, as reported by the South Bend Tribune.

The council will discuss the agreement during its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, April 4, at Mishawaka City Hall, 600 E. Third St.

Mishawaka would pay all legal costs if a big box store in its tax increment finance district seeks lower property taxes, and a proportion of the legal costs if a store outside of the TIF district seeks lower property taxes.

Big box stores like Meijer have recently used the lower value of their vacant stores to seek lower property values, the Tribune reported. The lower property values mean that the boxes would pay less property taxes.
