Election 2016: How to vote absentee by mail or in person in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties

The Indiana Primary is a little less than a month away, but voters don’t have to wait until May 3 to cast their ballots.

Absentee voting is available through the mail or in person in both St. Joseph and Elkhart counties. IDs are required for in-person voting but not required for absentee voting by mail.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY

Voters in St. Joseph County can stop by the County Services building at 219 Lincoln Way West, Mishawaka, or at the County-City Building, 227 W. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to cast an early ballot in person through noon May 2.

Both offices will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. April 23, April 30 and May 1 for early voting.

Absentee ballots can be requested by downloading a form online, printing it out and mailing it to the St. Joseph County Election Board, 101 S. Main St., South Bend, IN 46601. The form must be received by 11:59 p.m. April 25. A ballot will then be sent to the voter, which must be filled out and received by noon May 2.

All residents are eligible to vote absentee in person, but voters must have a special circumstance to vote absentee by mail. The list of acceptable circumstances is available on the St. Joseph County Election Board website.

ELKHART COUNTY

Elkhart County voters interested in absentee voting by mail can download a form from the Elkhart County Clerk website and mail it to the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, 101 N. Main St., Rm. 204, Goshen, IN 46526. The form must be received by 11:59 p.m. April 25. A ballot will then be sent to the voter, which must be filled out and received by noon May 2. The form can also be hand delivered.

Absentee voting in-person can be done in Elkhart County from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday until noon May 2 at:

  • County Administration Building, 117 N. 2nd St., Room 108, Goshen
  • Lincoln Center, 608 Oakland Ave., Elkhart

Absentee voting may also be done from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23 and April 30 at the above locations, as well as at:

  • First Brethren Church, 1600 N. Main St., Nappanee
  • Town Hall, 418 N. Main St., Middlebury
