LANSING, Mich. (AP) — It may seem that winter will never end, but Michigan officials say it’s time to prepare for storms and other bad weather that can strike during spring and summer.

Gov. Rick Snyder has designated this week as Severe Weather Awareness Week. Capt. Chris Kelenske of the Michigan State Police says flooding, thunderstorms and tornadoes are among hazards you should be ready to deal with.

He recommends learning severe weather warnings and terms, having an emergency supply kit and creating an emergency contact list.

Last year, a tornado hit Ionia County while Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties were slammed by severe thunderstorms.

A voluntary statewide tornado drill is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. this Wednesday. Businesses, organizations, families and individuals are encouraged to participate.
