Women’s groups will rally in downtown South Bend on Tuesday, April 12, to raise awareness about equal pay for women.

Tuesday is Equal Pay Day 2016, the day that marks how far into the year women must work to earn the same amount of money that men earned the year before, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity.

The YWCA, League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area, Association of American University Women and Feminist Federation of South Bend are hosting a public rally at noon Tuesday on the east steps of the St. Joseph County Courthouse in downtown South Bend.

Attendees are encouraged to wear red to symbolize that women’s paychecks are “in the red.” The event will feature a “Minute at the Mic” where attendees will be able to speak about equal pay for women for up to a minute at a time.

The groups will gather again for a “toast to equality” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tapastrie in downtown South Bend. The bar will serve a drink called “Up from 75,” which references the statistic that women in Indiana earn an average of 75 cents for every dollar earned by men.
