Teen arrested after being accused of offering rides to kids waiting for school bus in Elkhart

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on several preliminary charges after students told their bus drive he was offering rides to them while they were waiting on a school bus in Elkhart on Friday morning, April 22.

Students were waiting at their bus stop at Toledo Road and C.R. 15 when the boy drove up and asked them if they wanted a ride, our news partners ABC 57. The students refused and told their bus driver when they got on the bus. The bus driver then called police.

The suspect was driving erratically and following the bus when police caught up to him and tried to pull him over, but the suspect kept driving.

At one point, the driver nearly drove in front of an oncoming school bus carrying students. Eventually he stopped at a home in the 59000 block of Creek Ridge Court outside of Elkhart.

He was hospitalized for a pre-existing condition and then arrested on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness, operating while intoxicated, illegal alcohol consumption, resisting law enforcement and driving a vehicle without a license.
