An Elkhart woman will have to wait a little longer for her jury trial.
Officials say Mikayla Munn, 21, drowned her newborn baby in the tub of her Manchester University dorm room. It happened in March of this year, according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.
Her jury trial in Wabash County Circuit Court will now be Feb. 7. She’s facing 45 to 65 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 on her murder charge. That’s on top of 20 to 40 years and the same fine for a charge of child neglect causing death.
A probable cause affidavit filed in Wabash Circuit Court says Munn searched for home abortion methods in February. It says she discovered in mid-2015 she was pregnant. This despite her statements to police she was unaware of her pregnancy when she gave birth March 8.
Police say first responders called to Munn’s dormitory room March 8 found the woman and the infant in a bathtub and the child wasn’t breathing. He was later pronounced dead.
The Wabash County Coroner’s Office determined the baby had taken a breath and that was alive at the time of birth, according to the Elkhart Truth.
