South Bend city clerk is asking for $13k raise after less than one year on job

Her salary is right in line with city clerks in similar-sized cities. Despite that, South Bend city clerk Kareemah Fowler thinks she deserves a 23-percent raise.

In the proposed 2017 city budget, Fowler is the only employee that’s asking for more than a 2-percent raise. It’s because she feels she is underpaid for the level of workload she deals with, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Fowler’s job responsibilities include acting as the clerk of the city council. Also, she oversees city records, ordinances, and the municipal code book. She says she works about 60 hours a week “easily”, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Her salary would go up from $59,000 to $73,000. That would eclipse city clerk salaries in Fort Wayne ($59,400), Evansville ($64,000), Lafayette ($60,000), and Bloomington ($52,000).

Fowler took the post in January. She replaced John Voorde, who will be among the South Bend Common Council members considering the pay raise Monday.

In a day when all are trying to conserve, watch their pennies, and be as frugal as possible, it’s pretty presumptuous for the South Bend City Clerk to to think she is si valuable to require such an increase in pay! Perhaps she should be thankful she has a job!!

I totally agree that she deserves a 23% raise. After all, she had no idea what this job entailed when she accepted it. (DUH!) I think I will tell my boss I want a 99% raise because I feel like my job warrants it. People are ridiculous. She will get a big raise because no one will want to offend her or face a discrimination law suit of some type…City Clerk Lives Matter!

I assume she knew the pay when she accepted the job. There is one easy answer, resign.

How does her work load compare to those who hild the dame position in the comparison cities listed?
Maybe they should add a part time helper to avoid job burnout.

the plan, as with all schemes like this, is to ask for WAY to much and then “settle” for much more than she deserves!

If the council decides that she deserves that type of a raise less than then I think it’s time to get rid of the council as well. South Bend IN to have a phenomenal way of spending money the most foolish way that I have ever seen. The changes that have been made to the roads and streets in South Bend though some of them may have been needed in my opinion seems to be the biggest waste they have done nothing to bring new jobs for new Enterprise in to the town or the area. The council passes the Rays you people continue to vote them in makes me wonder who the foolish ones are.
